Atletico Madrid was founded in April 1903 as a daughter club of the Basque Athletic Bilbao. In 1920 the club became independent and in 1939, after the Spanish Burgeroorlog, merged with Aviación Nacional from Zaragoza, the club of the Spanish army. Athletic Aviación de Madrid won the national title in 1940 and 1941, after which the name of the club was changed to Atlético Aviación de Madrid due to dictator Francisco Franco. In 1947 the club was disconnected from the air force and renamed Club Atletico de Madrid.
Atlético Madrid has won two prizes in the course of the year, thanks to trainer Luis Aragonés, who worked for the club for three periods. Simeone transformed the club from 2011 to a rich prize package.
